Why Now Is the Ideal Time to Upgrade to a Heat Pump in Yorkshire

The Grant Situation (updated for 2026)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme currently offers:

• £7,500 toward an air-to-water heat pump installation
• £9,000 for eligible properties currently on oil or LPG, available from 21 July 2026 to March 2027
• £2,500 for air-to-air heat pump installations (eligible from April 2026)
• 0% VAT on heat pumps, solar panels and batteries, extended to 2027

For the many homes across rural North Yorkshire that are off the gas grid and running on heating oil or LPG, the £9,000 grant window this summer is a particularly significant opportunity. Modern air source heat pumps produce 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity they consume — making them among the most efficient heating systems available for domestic properties. In practice that means:

• Lower long-term energy bills compared to oil, LPG or electric heating
• An improved EPC rating, which matters increasingly for property values and mortgage lending
• A significantly reduced carbon footprint

Electricity prices are forecast to remain more stable than gas over the long term, and as the grid becomes more renewable, the economics of heat pump ownership improve further still — particularly when combined with solar panels and battery storage.

Why Acting in 2026 Makes Sense for North Yorkshire Homeowners

To put it plainly:

• The grant is at its most generous for oil and LPG households right now
• 0% VAT on installation runs until 2027
• Regulations are tightening progressively — acting ahead of the curve is always cheaper than reacting to it
• Gas prices continue to rise while electricity costs stabilise
• Installation lead times are manageable now but will lengthen as demand grows
